THE AVENUES
Douglas of Glenbervie – Host Clan for the 154th Waipu Highland Games
Clan Douglas (Dubh-glas in Gaelic) was a very powerful Borders clan for many centuries, with strong links to the Scottish and English royal families. Famous clan members include Sir James Douglas, who was noted for his support of Robert the Bruce, and Mary Queen of Scots’ husband Lord Darnley.
The Glenbervie line is recorded back to the 12th century, descending directly from Sir William de Douglas of Glenbervie. A new crest and motto were matriculated in 1993 for the New Zealand branch. Our motto is Toujours devant (always ahead), which differs slightly from the general Douglas clan motto of Jamais arriere (never behind). Both crests feature a salamander in flames.
